Why are belts used for champions in pro-wrestling?
Belts are meant to hold pants up, wouldn’t a trophy seem more appropriate? Athletes don’t get gold belts when they win championships, they win trophies.
a belt can be worn around the waist or held over the shoulder, a Trophy would need to be held, or put on a stand
also the belt can be used as a weapon with minimal risk of being broken and no stray pieces causing extra damage
a lot of sports do present Rings to their champions as keepsakes ut due to the small size they don’t really transfer well in wrestling – as evidenced by the failed TNA angle with HoF Rings
also in wrestling the Belt is transferred through direct ‘competition’ in most other sports the Championship is determined through season long activity. the MLB/NFL championship isn’t won by beating the previous champion (sure the new champs could have met and beaten them during the season but it has no direct bearing on transfer of title)
I think its a concept borrowed from the Boxing world, but I’m unsure of why Boxing (as a legit sport) would have used Belts
